The 1989 George Bush
Official Presidential Inaugural Medal Process Set

This exhibit will look at the 1989 George Bush Official Presidential Inaugural Medal at eight stages of its manufacturing. As with the previous process set each stage may represent several actual steps in the process. No explanations of the steps are given in this photo essay since that would be redundant with the Striking a Medal e-Exhibit which featured the 1981 Ronald Reagan Official Presidential Inaugural Medal process set.

Stage One
The Planchet

Stage Two
First Strike

Stage Three
Second Strike

Stage Four
Third Strike

Stage Five
Fourth Strike

Stage Six
Fifth Strike!

Stage Seven
Trimming, Edge Lettering,
Sandblasting & Antiquing

Stage Eight

BONUS Not all medals survive the process from start to finsh. Sometimes mistakes are made and a partially completed medal has to be scrapped. Below is pictured one such medal. The obverse appears to have progressed normally and was at about stage 4 or 5; however, it lookes like an incorrect reverse die was used ruinning that face.
